The honest answer is that most people spend far less than they fear. The look that made you fall in love — usually a single statement wall — is also the most affordable way in. Here’s exactly what to budget in 2026, and how the way you buy wallpaper can quietly save you money.
In South Africa, wallpaper ranges from around R80 per square metre for basic vinyl rolls to well over R1,500 per square metre for imported and bespoke designs. A feature wall is the single most cost-effective way to use wallpaper — full impact on one wall, at a fraction of the price of the whole room. Take a typical feature wall of 3 m wide by 2.5 m high (7.5 m²):

Most wallpaper in South Africa is still sold by the roll. A standard roll covers about 5 m², and you buy whole rolls — so if your wall needs “one and a bit” rolls, you pay for two. On a 7.5 m² feature wall, roll-buying means paying for around 10 m² and binning the offcuts: roughly a quarter of your spend, wasted.
